Job Description



  This is a hybrid-remote position - incumbents, who reside in Oregon or Washington only, may work 1-3 days a week at an assigned Legacy Health location, and other days may work remotely at home, on the road or in a satellite location for the remainder of their work week. This role is highly consultative and has regular meetings at a variety of Legacy locations across the Portland Metro/SW Washington area.

 

All new hires are required to come to a designated Legacy Health office location in Portland, Oregon prior to their start date for a new hire health assessment and to complete new hire paperwork. This position may require initial training and orientation to be site-based, before transitioning to the hybrid schedule.

The area Compliance Officer (ACO) is a member of the Legacy Corporate Compliance team and reports directly to the Vice President/Chief Compliance Officer (CCO). As part of the enterprise-wide Legacy Compliance Program, the ACO’s responsibility is to advance our program effectiveness at assigned Legacy entities to prevent, detect and remediate illegal, unethical, or improper conduct. Directly and actively engaged in operations, the ACOs support detection and mitigation of risk within the business. The ACO is responsible for maintaining current knowledge of relevant state and federal laws and regulations that apply to hospital facilities and/or medical groups licensed in the states of Oregon and Washington, and acts as a resource and representative when compliance issues arise at their assigned facilities. The ACO demonstrates service excellence and positive interpersonal relations in dealing with others, including patients/families/members, employees, managers, medical staff, volunteers, and community members, so that productivity and positive relations are maximized. The ACO serves as on-site champion for and consultant on ethical and compliant practices and behaviors consistent with Legacy’s values and Code of Conduct.

 

The ACO supports the implementation of appropriate policies and procedures, supports compliance training, conducts investigations in partnership with compliance subject matter experts. Maintains a systems of compliance reporting and metrics at their assigned entities, including corrective action implementation and validation. The ACO is responsible for following up on reported incidents of non-compliance, coordinating internal investigations, and preparing reports on incidents and investigation findings. The ACO also assists with the evaluation of areas of potential billing fraud and abuse, and compliance risk assessment. Collaborates with management to implement solutions to eliminate potential risks at their assigned entities. The ACO works collaboratively to share information about compliance risks and to develop mitigation strategies to ensure that compliance risks are addressed at all Legacy entities.

 

The ACO is responsible for maintaining current knowledge of relevant state and federal laws and regulations, and acts as an expert resource and representative when local compliance issues arise. Coordinates entity-level compliance efforts among departments with specific areas of substantive compliance responsibility; keeps leadership informed about compliance risks and other appropriate compliance information, chairs entity-based Compliance Committee meetings and other meetings as assigned; monitors Legacy’s hospital and medical group compliance programs; and prepares and presents compliance dashboards and regular reports to the Corporate Compliance Committee. Develops annual plans for monitoring and auditing the effectiveness of the Compliance Program and compliance with specific standards, policies, procedures, and legal requirements for assigned area. Develops and performs audit and monitoring, and coordinates compliance audit/review activity with audit activity of external and internal auditors.

 

The ACO is responsible for working in partnership with other Corporate Compliance team members on compliance issues and projects as assigned that impact Legacy but may not be specific to their assigned facilities.

Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Healthcare related field or equivalent experience required. Master’s Degree preferred. Equivalent additional experience may be substituted for the education requirement.

 

Experience:

Five (5) or more years of progressive experience in healthcare compliance, internal audit, revenue cycle and/or hospital operations required. Demonstrated knowledge of laws and regulations pertaining to Legacy operations and clinical services. Extensive knowledge/experience in compliance and management of an effective compliance program, including training, monitoring, conducting and documenting investigations, addressing violations, and monitoring corrective actions. Highly developed written and verbal communication and presentation skills; ability to present to various levels within the organization. Strong interdepartmental collaboration skills; willingness to engage across teams and demonstrates the ability to lead indirectly through influence. Ability to prioritize and work on multiple projects and a variety of complicated tasks at the same time.
