Job Description:

  • Manages an advising caseload of studentsâ™ advisees.
  • Demonstrates leadership and expertise in academic advising and stay informed about various academic programs, policies, and resources.
  • Supports staff overseeing student progress, academic difficulties, and referrals to appropriate resources.
  • Utilizes counseling skills to address student challenges and establishes positive relationships; sets norms and expectations for advising relationships between students and advisers.
  • Liaise with the financial aid office.
  • Acts as a resource for College Advisers, DOS staff, faculty, and other University partners.
  • Collaborates with academic units, possessing knowledge about curriculum, major and minor programs, course offerings, and credit-related issues.
  • Serves on the Dean of Students leadership team, collaborating with other team members, and supervising assistant deans, senior advisors, and advisors. Effective leadership involves coordinating efforts, setting expectations, and creating an inclusive and motivated team environment.
  • Chairs or serves on relevant committees, sets regular agendas, and coordinates meetings in the advising office.
  • Identifies opportunities for staff education and cross-training within the DOS office and with campus partners and academic units.
  • Leads matters related to the academic advising office within the DOS.
  • Communicates effectively with parents when appropriate.
  • Responsible for recruitment, onboarding, training, professional development, and supervision of staff. This involves identifying learning needs, designing effective training programs, and fostering a culture of continuous learning.
  • Develops and implements strategic plans for the CAATO by identifying key objectives and prioritizing initiatives.
  • Interprets and applies University policy and deadlines, keeping accurate records of student progress towards degrees; communicates policies and deadlines effectively to staff and students.
  • Stays informed about study abroad programs, internships, campus jobs, student activities, graduate school, and career planning; leads efforts to maintain this expertise for office members.
  • Oversees, assesses, and reports on the International Student at Large (ISAL) program.
  • Develops advising and support programs for incoming and continuing transfer students and non-traditional students.
  • Develops staff development programs that educate the staff in the full range of information they must know--curricular, campus resources, developmental issues facing the college-aged population, psychological issues, financial aid policies, etc.
  • Manages advisors who handle discipline cases and student problems and crises. Recommends effective advising strategies for these students.
  • Performs other related work as needed.

Preferred Qualifications

Education:

  • Masterâ™s or doctoral degree.

Experience:

  • Transfer credit evaluation process.
  • Developing and implementing short- and long-term strategic plans.
  • Demonstrated experience working with a diverse student population and fostering inclusivity on a college campus.
  • Processing comprehensive knowledge and understanding of academic advising principles and practices.
  • International student experience.

Technical Skills or Knowledge:

  • Excellent computer skills.
  • Use complex databases
  • Accurate and detailed record-keeping.
  • Knowledge of relevant federal and state regulations impacting student affairs and compliance in higher education.

Preferred Competencies

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Interact effectively with a variety of stakeholders across the University.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead a team and foster collaboration.

Working Conditions

  • Office environment.
  • Work eveningx or weekends depending on the work to be performed and the calendar of events.
  • Fast-paced environment.
  • Work at a computer for 4-6 hours.
  • Periodic movement between campus locations.
