Job Description

Our client is a leading subsidiary of a global automotive parts manufacturer, specializing in high-quality metal trim components and innovative engineering solutions for vehicle body structures and safety systems. Having steadily built a reputation as one of the most recognizable automotive parts manufacturers, they are expanding their local US team and seeking a CAD Design Engineer.

As a CAD Design Engineer, you will be responsible for designing and developing high-quality roll-formed and extruded exterior trim components that meet performance, manufacturability, and aesthetic requirements. Working in a collaborative and multicultural environment, you will play a key role in refining designs, ensuring seamless integration with vehicle structures, and driving innovation in automotive trim solutions.

If you possess expertise in CATIA V6, GD&T, exterior trim design, plastic injection molding, sheet metal, surfacing, coatings, 3D modeling, drafting, BOM (Bill of Materials), DFMEA, DFM, APQP, and PPAP, along with a strong understanding of manufacturing processes for both plastic and metal components, we would love to hear from you.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and refine CAD models and detailed drawings for exterior trim components, including areas such as roofing, windshields, weather strips, seals, bumpers, grilles, rocker panels, spoilers, and moldings.
  • Design plastic, composite, and metal exterior trim parts, ensuring compliance with manufacturability, assembly, and durability requirements.
  • Modify and update existing designs while also creating new, innovative solutions for automotive exterior trim applications.
  • Work with BIW (Body-in-White) teams to ensure proper fitment, attachment strategies, and integration with adjacent components.
  • Apply GD&T principles to ensure precise tolerances and robust design specifications.
  • Conduct packaging studies to ensure clearance, tolerance stack-up, and optimal fit between trim components and surrounding structures.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including tooling, manufacturing, and suppliers, to optimize designs for cost, weight, and performance.
  • Work closely with CAE teams to evaluate structural integrity, NVH (Noise, Vibration & Harshness), and aerodynamics of exterior trim designs.
  • Conduct DFMEA and root cause analysis to enhance product reliability and manufacturability.
  • Provide technical support for prototype builds, identifying and resolving design challenges before mass production.
  • Work within Japanese business culture; language skills are a plus but not required.

Requirements:

  • 3–7 years of experience in CAD design, specifically for exterior trim components in the automotive industry.
  • Strong proficiency in CATIA V6 and experience with GD&T.
  • Experience with plastic injection molding, extrusion, and other trim manufacturing processes.
  • Knowledge of attachment methods such as clips, adhesives, fasteners, and welding techniques for exterior trims.
  • Familiarity with OEM design standards, APQP, and PPAP documentation.
  • Ability to hit the ground running, working independently on new designs and updates from day one.
  • Experience working in a multicultural environment; exposure to Japanese culture is a plus.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills to interact with cross-functional teams and suppliers.
  • A willingness to travel occasionally to Ohio and Kentucky.
