Job Title: Executive Director
Reports to: Board of Directors
Job Summary: The Executive Director is responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of the museum, including the development and execution of financial strategies. This role involves interpreting and applying the policies adopted by the Board of Directors and coordinating with the Board to oversee the museum's operations and activities. With the support of staff, the Executive Director plans and directs all museum activities and operations, ensuring the effective management of the museum’s collections, education, exhibitions, public programs, and museum store.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Leadership and Vision: Provide staff with vision and leadership to foster the institution’s growth and development, aiming for regional prominence and recognition. Develop strategies and initiatives to fulfill the museum’s mission, increase its audience, and ensure financial stability and growth.
- Collections Management: Direct the maintenance, display, and general welfare of loaned and in-house collections in accordance with the highest professional and ethical standards.
- Staff and Resource Management: Plan, organize, and direct the activities of professional and non-professional staff across all divisions of the museum. Prioritize and organize human and financial resources. Develop, coordinate, approve, and execute policies, methods, and procedures affecting all areas of the museum.
- Public Relations and Advocacy: Serve as a spokesperson and advocate for the museum, alongside members of the Board of Directors and other staff. Effectively represent the institution to community, professional, governmental, civic, and private agencies. Enhance the organization’s public image to expand interest and support.
- Fundraising and Development: Actively solicit strategic partnerships and collaborations, state support, and outside private support. Cultivate gifts and bequests. Develop and continue to review the museum’s strategic and fundraising plans with assistance from the Board to ensure continued strategic partnerships and fundraising to meet its educational, collections, and financial goals.
- Grant Writing and Reporting: Oversee the preparation and submission of grant applications. Ensure accurate and timely reporting on grant-funded projects and initiatives.
- Marketing: Develop and implement comprehensive marketing strategies to promote the museum’s programs, exhibitions, and events. Increase public awareness and engagement through various marketing channels, including digital media, print, and community outreach.
- Strategic Planning: Lead the development and implementation of the museum’s strategic plan, setting long-term goals and objectives to ensure the museum’s growth and sustainability. Align strategic initiatives with the museum’s mission and vision, and adapt to changing environments and opportunities.
- Financial Management: Oversee financial decisions to ensure they align with the museum’s budget. Manage financial resources effectively to support the museum’s operations and strategic goals.
- Board Coordination: Under the direction of the Board of Directors, provide overall leadership, direction, and information required for the Board to make decisions and take actions. Recommend policies and plans to the Board of Directors.
- Other Duties: Perform other duties as assigned by the Board of Directors.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Management, Museum Studies, or a related field and/or at least 3 years of managerial or directorial experience, preferably within a museum or cultural institution.
- Proven experience in organizational management, staff management, and strategic planning.
- Strong financial acumen and experience in budget management.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and implement successful fundraising and marketing strategies.
- Experience in grant writing and reporting.
- Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse range of stakeholders, including board members, staff, volunteers, and community partners.
