Job Description Under general supervision, performs all types of work (except welding) in connection with construction, operations, and maintenance of gas facilities; responds to gas leaks; carbon monoxide (CO) calls; connects and disconnects gas equipment and appliances; installs, repairs, removes and inspects residential and small commercial gas meters, regulators and associated equipment: turns on and off electric and gas services, boots meters Class 200/240V single phase and below. Includes lighting gas equipment and appliances. Reads utility meters. Uses a computer and associated software in performance of regular duties. Performs duties of the Utility Operator.
Responsibilities 1. Performs work in safe manner. Complies with all applicable safety rules, regulations and procedures. Performs all work that they are qualified and trained to do in a manner to protect themselves, fellow employees and the public from injury. 2. May locate underground gas and electric facilities in conjunction with their work. Additionally, may perform locates where no Locator/Leak Surveyors exist. 3. Performs mechanical type tasks such as the fusing of and installation of plastic pipe, installation of steel pipe, installing sleeves, unions, clamps, ells, tees, and crosses. May bury other underground utilities. Applies protective coating on steel pipe and fittings. Installs locating wire on plastic and steel facilities, installs cathodic protection devices and takes reads. Assists with setting, removing and piping large meters and regulators. May perform miscellaneous restoration work. 4. Responsible for work being performed in accordance with Company and departmental rules, regulations, policies, procedures, and construction standards. Reads and interprets drawings and specifications and works from prints, sketches and/or verbal instructions. 5. Operates main drilling, tapping and stoppering equipment up through 2", unless specifically trained and qualified for larger sizes. Assists with sizes greater than 2". 6. Completes leak surveys and checks for gas leaks and CO on customer's premise and on company owned facilities and uses associated equipment to investigate the call. Leaks to be fixed by the employee where applicable or determination made as to whether the leak is of a serious enough nature to require immediate action. 7. May assist with measurements and field paperwork required in connection with operations, maintenance and construction work, including the requisition of materials. 8. Changes and/or installs gas meters and regulators, and adjusts meters and regulators for proper pressures except as performed by the Meter and Control Technicians. May include relocation of meters and regulators. Changes charts, checks regulators, takes readings, opens and closes service riser and meter set valves. 9. Inspects assigned work, appraises work and procedures to be employed and observes gas equipment and appliances for abnormal conditions. Takes proper measures toremedy same and reports to proper authority as required. 10. Investigates high gas bill complaints. Requires checking the operating efficiency of all appliances and explaining the reason to the customer. Bill corrections will be referred to appropriate personnel. 11. Tests odorant in gas using odorometer or universal tester; may read, set and remove recording devices and may make adjustments to odorant controls except as performed by Meter & Control Technician. 12. May make minor repairs such as re-setting single phase residential circuit breakers and/or replacing fuses in conjunction with service calls. 13. Install, test for, and maintain cathodic protection devices on gas mains and services have knowledge of all cathodic protection devices such as test stations, insulators, and anodes, have a general knowledge of rectifiers. Installs and repairs electric and gas remote read devices. 14. Runs fuel line to gas equipment and appliances; repairs, replaces and removes fuel lines
Qualifications - CDL Required at time of or shortly after hire - must have passed the written part of the test to be considered. - Previous related experience or education in the gas industry is preferred. Related experience might include, pipe laying or fitting, experience reading and evaluating gas meters and/or regulators, experience with gas appliances or carbon monoxide testing. - Previous construction related experience with running construction and/or heavy equipment is preferred. - Pipeline/Highway Alcohol and Drug Testing - High school diploma or equivalency required Employees must be able to perform the essential functions of the position, with or without an accommodation.
