About the Governor's Summer Internship:

The summer internship program provides participants the opportunity to work with state agency officials, as well as participate in co-curricular components to enrich their experiences. Interns spend at least 50 percent of their time on predetermined projects that enhance college-level skills and abilities. The co-curricular components of the program ensure competitive, reputable, and inclusive experiential learning. Interns participate in cohort activities on a weekly basis designed to enable:

  • Professional growth and preparedness for the workforce upon graduation
  • Exposure to many facets of state government
  • Networking and camaraderie development among the cohort

The CHE Financial Aid Intern will work primarily as a member of the Postsecondary Transitions team supporting the implementation of the 21st Century Scholars program and increasing FAFSA filing for high school seniors and postsecondary students. You will report to the Director for Postsecondary Program Implementation. There are three pillars guiding the CHE HOPE Agenda – college enrollment, college completion, and college graduate retention – and the 21st Century Scholars programs and FAFSA filing address all three.

The intern will collaborate internally with the K-12 Outreach, State Financial Aid, Marketing and Communications, and Public Policy teams, and externally with K-12 and higher education partners. Following the 2023 legislative session, CHE will automatically enroll all eligible students into the 21st Century Scholars program for which high school seniors are required to submit the FAFSA. The intern will assist with increasing eligible students’ engagement in the 21st Century Scholars program and FAFSA filing to increase college-going, utilization of state financial aid, and college completion.

A Day in the Life

The essential functions of this internship are:

  • Support the CHE K-12 Outreach team to communicate with K-12 school superintendents, principals, and counselors to (a) submit final graduation details for the class of 2024 and (b) submit preliminary graduation details for the class of 2025 to support determining students’ eligibility for state financial aid and Indiana Pre-Admissions: Your Path to College.
  • Collaborate with CHE’s State Financial Aid team to upload data from the Indiana Department of Education to the ScholarTrack system and support CHE’s K-12 Outreach team to ensure that school rosters are up to date in the ScholarTrack system.
  • Partner with the Senior Outreach Coordinators and Financial Aid Support Specialists to draft updated content for the high school Scholar Success Program for 21st Century Scholars.
  • Partner with the Marketing & Communications team to update the Learn More Indiana website and all related resources/materials about 21st Century Scholars and FAFSA for the 2024-2025 academic year.
  • Draft 21st Century Scholars enrollment letters to be mailed to parents/guardians, as well as e-mail communications for high school counselors.
  • Partner with CHE’s Postsecondary Transitions Manager and Content Marketing Specialist to develop e-mail and social media campaigns for 2024-2025 to encourage 21st Century Scholars to sign their pledge and complete their Scholar Success Program activities and encourage high school seniors to file the FAFSA.

The job description is not designed to cover or contain a comprehensive listing of activities, duties, or responsibilities that are required of the employee. Other duties, responsibilities, and activities may change or be assigned at any time.

What You'll Need for Success

  • Must be currently enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate with an accredited post-secondary institution and have completed at least one (1) year of undergraduate education.
  • Academic work in a related field of study.
  • Must be a detail-oriented self-starter who can be given a need or objective, break it down into executable pieces, identify questions that need to be asked, gather priorities and requirements, set and manage milestones, and then execute effectively.
  • Excellent organizational, time management, and documentation skills.
  • Excellent written, verbal, public speaking, listening, processing, and synthesizing skills.
  • Strong computer literacy, including the Microsoft Office suite.
  • Ability to work both as part of a collaborative team and independently.
  • Ability to build relationships and collaborate effectively with multiple entities and agencies.
