Laboratory Technician

Job Summary

This laboratory technician position is supervised by the Biology Chairperson and works closely with two other laboratory technicians and our lab coordinator. The technician organizes and maintains all Microbiology and Introductory laboratory class schedules with course coordinators and class instructors and sets up all Microbiology lab materials. The position additionally helps set up the introductory biology labs and helps maintain common departmental equipment.

  • Organize a detailed schedule for lab classes with course coordinator

  • Schedule and organize the class activities with each class

  • Supervise, train, and observe any student workers for lab preparations and biohazard handling

  • Prepare class materials such as media, equipment, supplies, and microorganism strains

  • Order all class materials ahead of time based on class schedule

  • Assist in the lab activities as needed to ensure lab runs smoothly

  • Maintain biohazard wastes (liquid, solid, and sharps) and biohazard waste containers daily

  • Handle the upkeep, repair, and operation of all laboratory teaching instruments

  • Coordinate operation and maintenance for the autoclave machines

  • Maintain safe environment in the teaching laboratories

  • Facilities maintenance - report repair needs to Facilities and keep track of their completion.

  • Maintain service contracts for designated instructional laboratory equipment (microscopes, micropipettors, centrifuges, etc.); manage contracts, service calls, and calibration schedules, as necessary.

  • Proctor examinations.

  • Help test new lectures and laboratory experiments.

  • Perform other duties to fulfill the department's needs as required by the Department Chair or Laboratory Coordinator.




Competencies


  • Organizational skills (maintain schedules and contracts and purchase reagents in advance of classes)

  • Ability to plan and carry out tasks that span multiple weeks (Work with instructors to plan labs, some of which require >1-week advance preparation)

  • Adaptability and troubleshooting ability (sometimes a multi-day lab prep goes wrong and must be replaced quickly)

  • Good observation and attention (Be aware when reagents begin to run low or are insufficient for classes, when equipment needs servicing, etc.)

  • Good interpersonal and management skills (Position requires supervising lab instructors)

  • Proficiency in software such as Word, PowerPoint, and Excel

  • Specific technical skills

    • Basic molecular biology skills

    • Solution preparation

    • Expertise with microbiology

    • Expertise in introductory biology labs

    • Cleaning and sterilizing glassware

    • Autoclave use




Supervisory Responsibility


The position does not have an official supervisory role for employees. However, this position manages 8-16 instructors for microbiology each semester.



Work Environment


This position operates in a standard microbiology laboratory environment and is required to work with biohazardous chemicals and materials as well as standard laboratory equipment such as centrifuges, incubators, and heat baths. This position also operates in general lab spaces with communal equipment for teaching and research, utilizing and maintaining equipment such as autoclaves, ultracentrifuges, -80 freezers, etc.


This position additionally operates in a professional office environment and is required to use standard office equipment such as personal computers, copiers, printers, etc.



Physical Demands


While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand; move about; sit; to carry work and use controls; reach with hands and arms; wear personal protective equipment; climb stairs; communicate. The employee must occasionally lift or move more than 50 lbs. The employee will need to handle, package, sterilize, and dispose of containers for biological and biohazardous waste. While performing the duties of this job, the employee must work with standard laboratory chemicals and reagents.


Specific vision abilities required by the employee include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus, etc.



Environmental Conditions


The work environment will involve the use of laboratory chemicals, including acids, irritants, dyes and stains, biological materials, and odorous chemicals. The environment will include interacting with sharp containers and biohazardous waste containers. The laboratory technician will work with the Environmental Health and Safety office on campus to ensure a safe environment for themselves, instructors, and students.



Position Type/Expected Hours of Work


This position is full-time. It requires a flexible schedule to coordinate with and support the departmental lab courses. This will generally fall within Monday through Friday, from 8:30 to 4:30 but may fluctuate depending on specific lab needs.



Required Education and Experience


  • A BS in Biology or Chemistry required

  • Must have some biology laboratory experience

  • Good computer skills with proficiency in Excel, Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint

  • Ability to interact professionally with diverse groups of students, instructors, and support staff

  • Ability to manage, supervise, and monitor instructors for undergraduate teaching labs




Preferred Education and Experience


  • MS in Biology or related field preferred

  • Preference for candidates that have teaching and laboratory teaching experience, particularly in microbiology

In compliance with NYC's Pay Transparency Act, the annual salary range for this position is $48,700-$51,400. This position may be relocated to any of St. John's University's physical locations at any time.
