Position Details

TITLE: Middle School Assistant Principal

JOB SUMMARY: The assistant principal provides support for both supervisory and administrative functions.

REPORTS TO: Middle School Principal

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Administrator Handbook

50 week per year position / Full time

Hours during summer and school breaks may vary, as determined by district administration

EVALUATION: Annually until reaching maximum; refer to Administrator Handbook

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Education:
    • Required: Master’s degree; both undergraduate and graduate work must be of exceptionally high quality. Inclusion in the candidate’s graduate training of appropriate courses in school administration and supervision is expected
    • Required: Valid Michigan teaching certificate and valid Michigan administrator certificate are required. Must meet all requirements for continuing education as outlined under section 1246 (1) of the Revised School Code
  • Demonstrated Technical Skills:
    • Required: Advanced level computer knowledge and experience in Microsoft Office, Google Suite, and other computer skills
    • Required: Proficient using data to inform decisions around school improvement related goals
    • Required: Strong familiarity and experience utilizing learning management systems, student information systems, and instructional technology (Canvas and Synergy experience preferred)
  • Experience:
    • Required: At least five years of teaching with excellent quality
    • Required: Previous administrative experience with evidence of successful leadership
  • Public Relations Skills:
    • Establish and maintain good public reactions and communication with students, parents, and members of the community while maintaining a calm and professional image
    • Show evidence of patience and flexibility and an ability to inspire creativity, innovation, and growth in staff, students, and parents
  • Able to work an irregular schedule
  • Broad knowledge of modern learning theory and evidence-based practices, child growth and development, and modern trends and priorities in secondary school education
  • Possess a keen awareness of the variability of student behavior, sensitivity to the feelings and challenges of students, and skills to provide appropriate support
  • Possess sound, independent judgment, including handling of confidential matters
  • Ability to adapt to changes in plans or activities on short notice
  • Pass background check

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Act as a support to the building principal: support the development of teaching and learning, coordinate curriculum in collaboration with district staff, and provide instructional support as requested by the principal
  • Nurture, lead, and instruct children from a broad socio-economic base and diverse cultural backgrounds
  • Develop the master schedule and monitor frequently to ensure efficient use of staff and that the school/district instructional priorities are being met
  • Address and document student behavior issues promptly and effectively, utilizing restorative practices when appropriate
  • Collaborate with teachers, counselors, support staff, and parents to provide interventions and supports for students experiencing academic behavioral, or social-emotional challenges
  • Manage student attendance and truancy, working with families and community partners to address attendance barriers
  • Act as a mentor, coach, and evaluator for the administrative, teaching, and support staff assigned to the building
  • Collaborate as an administrative team member around other district-level initiatives for students and staff
  • Communicate effectively with students, staff, parents, and families verbally and in writing, in a timely, cohesive and accurate manner
  • Lead and support collaborative teams
  • Successfully complete district assigned trainings, per established deadlines – job specific training will be provided as available
  • Organize and prioritize tasks to meet deadlines
  • Maintain an organized environment
  • Work independently as well as with a team
  • Accept and perform additional administrative responsibilities as assigned
  • Fine motor skills and ability to lift up to 50 pounds unassisted, to lift and move equipment and supplies
  • Able to stand or sit for long periods of time (up to entire shift as tasks require), as well as stoop, squat, bend, crouch, reach, kneel, and climb stairs frequently during the shift
  • Able to ride in a vehicle, as necessary (e.g., training on occasion)
  • Able to work indoors and outdoors during all seasons/weather/temperatures as permitted

ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Communicate effectively via district-assigned email on a daily basis as determined by supervisor
  • Accurately complete electronic time sheets and absence reporting via time keeping system, per assigned deadlines
  • Regular and reliable in person attendance
  • Consistent and reliable performance of job responsibilities
  • Perform other job responsibilities deemed appropriate by the supervisor/building administrator and/or Superintendent
