The Florida Department of Health (DOH) is responsible for the health and safety of all citizens and visitors to the state. As a public health agency, the Florida Department of Health must monitor the health status of Floridians, diagnose, and investigate health problems, and mobilize local communities to address health-related issues. The Florida Department of Health develops policies and plans that support health goals, enforce laws and regulations that protect the health of all residents and visitors, and link people to needed health care services. The Florida Department of Health also provides specialized assistance to pregnant women, infants, and children with special health care needs, regulates health care practitioners, and provides medical disability determinations.

 

OPS Senior Health Educator:

This position will serve as a team member with the Office of Behavioral Health within the Community Health division. Works independently under the supervision of the Human Services Program Manager.

This is a highly independent position and responsible for health promotion and education associated with the Office of Behavioral Health. The Office of Behavioral Health in the Community Health Division will assure that the burden and impact of diseases on vulnerable populations are acknowledged and addressed through research, advocacy, surveillance, education, training, and program development. The Office will work to promote, protect, and improve the health and well-being of disparate and under-served populations through wide-ranging programs and policy initiatives.

 

The Senior Health Educator must have knowledge of behavioral health and associated conditions such as mental health and substance abuse (specifically pertaining to opioids), homelessness, and suicide along with a thorough understanding of substance abuse pathways, community engagement and strategic planning is required.

 

The Senior Health Educator must have experience in public speaking, professional presentations, health education approaches, behavioral health and substance abuse.

 

The ability to multi-task and communicate effectively with a wide variety of audiences is needed.

 

Your Specific Responsibilities:

  • Act as the Subject Matter Expert for Behavioral Health, Mental Health and Substance Use Disorder. Reviews health education practices to ensure compliance with applicable rules and regulations.
  • Coordinates health promotion and public health education programs and activities with other agencies, civic, school, and professional groups. Outreach to medical community promoting Behavioral Health and Substance Use Disorder prevention programs.
  • Conducts health promotion and public health education classes, workshops and seminars for agency personnel, civic groups and the general public.
  • Advocates health promotion and public health education through participation in workshops or on planning boards, health care projects, advisory councils, and professional and civic organizations.
  • Promotes the Health Department programs and refer community members as appropriate to other community resources offered locally.
  • Attends community and other relevant meetings for outreach to stakeholders and the community during regular work hours as well as after hours and on weekends.
  • Supports projects on the Behavioral Health Action Plan.
  • Contributes to program evaluation efforts.
  • Coordinate trainings for staff and partners as needed.
  • Conduct trainings for community partners and internal stakeholders.
  • Report training numbers and activities to supervisor and leadership.
  • Analyzes needs assessments to plan health promotion and public health education programs and activities. Evaluates health promotion and public health education programs and activities.
  • Participates in training programs, educational conferences and keeps informed and up-to-date on substance abuse and opioid-related issues.
  • Maintains active communication with other agencies and attends meetings as needed. Provides information for evaluation and accreditation practices as needed.

 

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of Substance Use Disorder prevention resources.
  • Knowledge of Substance Use Disorder reduction strategies.
  • Knowledge of behavioral health and associated conditions such as mental health and substance abuse (specifically pertaining to opioids), homelessness, and suicide.
  • Ability to develop, plan, and implement programs.
  • Ability to work with adults, including community organizations, community members and decision makers.
  • Knowledge of coalition development.
  • Ability to prioritize and organize work assignments and work independently.
  • Ability to build and maintain partnerships.
  • Ability to present accurate, science-based information to a variety of audiences.
  • Skilled in written and oral communications.
  • Knowledge of evaluation methods and practices.
  • Ability to work independently, with minimal supervision.

Qualifications:

Minimum

  • At least one year of experience providing professional or collegiate-level presentations to groups.
  • At least one year of experience creating and disseminating reports.

 

Preferred

  • A degree in public health, health education, behavioral health, OR 4 years of experience in the behavioral health field.
  • At least one year of experience with mental health or substance abuse treatment(s) and coping resources.
  • At least one year of experience facilitating group education or trainings.
