The Department of Biomedical Informatics and Medical Education provides training, research, and service in education and informatics across the breadth of health sciences and health care. Faculty interests and activities include: physician performance assessment, evidence based medicine, physician/patient communication skills, systems for clinical decision support, case based instruction, knowledge representation, retrieval and analysis, health professions diversity, public health informatics, health workforce projections, teaching and program evaluation and competencies for primary care.

The Luo Lab in the Department of Biomedical Informatics and Medical Education has a Postdoctoral Scholar position open with a focus in machine learning. The postdoctoral scholar will work on topics of mutual interest such as, but not limited to, automatic machine learning model selection and automatically explaining machine learning classification / prediction results.

The Luo lab is in UW Medicine’s South Lake Union campus near the city center of Seattle. The University of Washington, and the Seattle area in general, offer an excellent community and programs in computer science, medical informatics, and related fields.

The salary for this position will be $5,705 per month, commensurate with experience and qualifications, or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination.

The position is a full-time, 12-month (one-year) appointment, which may be extended (upon successful performance), subject to funding and mutual agreement. The Postdoctoral Scholar title is limited to five years, including postdoctoral experience(s) at UW and other institutions. Anticipated earliest start date of 1/2/24.

Postdoctoral Scholars are represented by UAW 4121 and are subject to the collective bargaining agreement, unless agreed exclusion criteria apply. For more information, please visit the University of Washington Labor Relations website ( ).

Qualifications

The successful applicant should have a Ph.D., or foreign equivalent, by date of appointment in machine learning from computer science or related areas and be proficient in Java, C, and Python programming. Familiarity with the source code of major open source machine learning software packages such as Weka, Tensorflow, and PyTorch is a plus.
