Job Description

The Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner is responsible for conducting comprehensive psychiatric assessments, developing treatment plans, prescribing medications, educating patients and families about mental health conditions, managing crises, and collaborating with other healthcare professionals to ensure optimal patient care.

Key Responsibilities

  • Patient Evaluation & Diagnosis: perform thorough psych evaluation to identify mental health disorders, including taking medical history, psychosocial factors, and previous treatment details
  • Treatment Planning: develop individualized treatment plans based on patient needs, including medication management, therapy modalities, and support services
  • Med Management: prescribe and monitor psychotropic medications, educate patients about potential side effects, and adjust dosages as needed
  • Crisis Intervention: respond to immediate mental health crises, providing stabilization strategies and coordinating necessary emergency care
  • Patient Education: teaching patients and their families about mental health conditions, coping mechanisms, and self-care practices.
  • Collaboration with Team: work closely with Vivia Health psychiatrists, social workers, case managers, and other healthcare professionals to provide holistic patient care.
  • Documentation: maintain accurate and comprehensive patient records in athenaOne and prepare clinical reports as required
  • serve as a resource for clinical decision-making and participate in committee initiatives to improve service delivery.

Required Qualifications

Education & Certification:

  • Master’s degree in Nursing with a specialization in Advanced Practice Psychiatric Nursing or equivalent Nurse Practitioner program.
  • Certification in Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing by the American Nurses
  • Credentialing Center (ANCC) or equivalent.
  • Current state licensure as a Registered Nurse and Advanced Practice Provider.

Experience & Skills

  • Minimum 2 years' experience in mental health care, patient counseling, or related fields.
  • Competency in managing both acute and chronic psychiatric conditions.
  • Ability and comfort working with seriously mentally ill
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication abilities.

Physical & Environmental Requirements

  • Ability to perform physical examinations and office procedures.
  • Capability to lift up to 100 pounds when necessary.
  • Must be able to stand and move for extended periods.
  • Regular exposure to typical healthcare hazards including infectious diseases and needle pricks.

Work Schedule and Location

  • On-site and in-person work within the community is required
  • Full Time (32 or more hours per week)
  • Mondays and Tuesdays at Vivia - Gage Park location
  • Wednesdays and Thursdays at Vivia - Bucktown location
