Context of the Job:

The Center for Counseling and Student Development (CCSD) is a multi-disciplinary, comprehensive student learning and psychological wellbeing program providing a diverse array of services so that students can be more successful in their academic, personal, and career pursuits.  The CCSD is IACS accredited and sponsors interdisciplinary training including an APA-accredited doctoral internship. CCSD is situated within the Wellbeing Portfolio which seeks to integrate care delivery in a seamless, holistic, and effective manner with excellence in clinical care and team functioning at its core. The Wellbeing Portfolio is part of the Division of Student Life (SL) whose mission is to advance equity and inclusion, deepen student learning and drive holistic development through education, experiences and communities.

Under the direction of the CCSD leadership team, the Psychological Assistant position is designed to provide an excellent early career opportunity for new graduates of doctoral psychology programs. The incumbent will receive dedicated supervision time with a licensed psychologist assigned by the center as they accumulate hours required for state licensure. Attention will be paid to developing the incumbent’s clinical and teamwork skills as well as monitoring and supporting progression toward licensure. The Psychological Assistant will be retained for one year (renewable for one additional year upon successful completion of year one).  

The Psychological Assistant has responsibility in three major areas: (1) Clinical excellence (direct clinical services including individual and group counseling, crisis management, outreach, and consultation); (2) Team excellence (embodying proactive and constructive interdisciplinary team skills both within and outside of the center), and (3) a commitment to training (participating in supervision and didactic training efforts). The Psychological Assistant enhances CCSD’s and the University’s national reputation through expertise in providing a broad range of college counseling services. This work is generally highly sensitive and requires thorough familiarity of ethical and legal procedures.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Commitment to the Division of Student Life’s values to serve as a guide for interactions and decision-making in CCSD and Wellbeing, and ultimately the collective culture of UD.
  • Serve as an approachable resource for faculty, staff, students, families, and community partners on effective health promotion and education.
  • On a rotating basis as assigned, respond to campus-wide weekday and evening crisis situations including those that are life threatening as the designated University authority for the handling of mental health crisis situations in the University community. Proactively assist other clinicians in addressing crisis situations as appropriate.
  • Provide effective, high quality, evidence-based individual and group counseling and psychotherapy. Case load as assigned.
  • Assess, evaluate, and diagnose a wide range of psychological disorders and personal, educational, and career development problems in undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Formulate case conceptualizations and develop, execute, monitor, and modify treatment plans that reflect evidence-based interventions that can be accomplished in a short-term model.
  • Maintain legally and ethically sound documentation and electronic medical record practices.
  • Supervise the counseling and clinical work of graduate students-in-training in alignment with CCSD mission and Training program goals as assigned.
  • Connect and liaise with campus colleagues and student organizations developing relationships and programming to engage and improve students’ experiences on campus as directed and in accordance with center goals. 
  • Provide consultation to students, professionals, faculty, and administrators for issues which have psychological dimensions as directed and in accordance with center goals.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of state and federal laws such as State of Delaware Child Abuse Reporting laws, FERPA, Title IX, and Clery Act.
  • Provide outreach to others on campus as directed and in accordance with center goals.
  • Initiate, develop, and provide student programs designed to enhance the intellectual, social, and personal growth of University students.
  • Serve on committees and/or perform special projects as directed and in accordance with center goals.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Maintain professional licensure and professional competence through appropriate continuing education opportunities.

Qualifications:

  • Doctoral degree in Clinical or Counseling Psychology is required, preferably from an academic department accredited by the American Psychological Association.
  • Completion of an internship in a college or university counseling center, preferably from a program accredited by the American Psychological Association, is strongly preferred. Priority will be given to graduates of CCSD's doctoral internship program.
  • Registered Psychological Assistant in the state of Delaware (or license eligible in Delaware). Must apply for and obtain Delaware state licensure as a Registered Psychological Assistant as outlined in the offer letter.
  • Experience working in a college counseling center, preferably a center with a training program.
  • Knowledge and professional experience of the personal, emotional, and psychological experience of students. This should be shown through publications, presentations, or skill in expressing such knowledge in person in an interview setting.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the development of emerging adults and counseling center administration; organizational and group dynamics, and student development issues and theory. 
  • Knowledge and understanding cultural competency and the complexity of equity and inclusion is essential and should be shown through graduate coursework, publications, presentations, and/or skill in expressing such knowledge in person in an interview setting.
  • Familiarity with counseling center clinical records and the software platforms utilized.
  • Understanding of the state of Delaware Child Abuse Reporting law, FERPA, Title IX, Clery Act, and trends in legal liability within college counseling center operations.
  • Proficiency in computer skills (e.g., Titanium, Point and Click, Excel, word processing, presentation software) and web navigation abilities.
  • Demonstrates an understanding and consideration of the differing needs and concerns of individuals with varying identities, cultures, and backgrounds.
