The Office of Wildlife exists to provide wise stewardship of Louisiana's wildlife and associated habitats and increase wildlife conservation awareness. WILDLIFE AND FISHERIES TECHNICIAN SUPERVISOR This position is a wildlife and fisheries technician supervisor position that receives direct supervision from a biologist supervisor in the Pineville field office. The incumbent performs daily operations on 4 WMAs in central Louisiana and provides data to biologists to be used in establishing management or research programs and setting harvest season dates and bag and size limits. This position supervises and participates in necessary construction and maintenance activities on Department buildings, grounds, roads, levees, equipment, camping areas, and water control structures. This position will supervise and participate in habitat management activities including planting food plots, operating water control structures, and conducting control burns. This position will supervise and participate in lethal and nonlethal collection of wildlife species for management and research utilizing firearms, baiting, corral traps, rocket nets, and bag checks. This position will train new technicians including the use, maintenance, and calibration of technical equipment, make recommendations concerning purchases of equipment, major repairs, and development projects and make recommendations for work procedures for subordinates. This position will also be responsible for transporting injured or nuisance animals, works with landowners, other state agencies, federal agencies, and non-governmental organizations and perform other duties necessary for the agency to accomplish its mission. Minimum Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Three years of experience in wildlife or fisheries management, research or conservation; forestry; land management; agriculture; commercial fishery; environmental science; or operation of heavy mobile equipment. SUBSTITUTIONS: College training with six semester hours per year in a biological, marine or environmental science, wildlife or fisheries management or research, agriculture, commercial fishery or forestry will substitute for the required experience on the basis of thirty semester hours for one year of experience. A baccalaureate degree in these fields will substitute for all of the required experience. NOTE: Any college hours or degree must be from an accredited college or university. Job Concepts FUNCTION OF WORK: Supervises staff in the development, research, and management activities on a Wildlife Management Area (WMA), Refuge, Fish Hatchery, Research Station, or a body of water. LEVEL OF WORK: Supervisor. SUPERVISION RECEIVED: General from a Biologist or higher-level Wildlife and Fisheries official. SUPERVISION EXERCISED: Direct over lower-level Wildlife and Fisheries Technicians and other lower-level staff. LOCATION OF WORK: Department of Wildlife and Fisheries. Provides data and makes recommendations to Biologists for establishing management programs, setting harvest season dates, and species size limits. Supervises and participates in necessary maintenance activities on Department properties, facilities, or water bodies, including all buildings, grounds, roads, levees, equipment, trapping camps, water control structures, hatchery ponds, lab facilities, etc. Supervises and participates in wildlife and fisheries management and improvement activities, planting food plots, operating water control structures, conducting control burns, etc. Supervises and participates in collection of fish and wildlife species for various life history research projects (age, growth, reproduction, population dynamics, etc.) utilizing a variety of capture methods (traps, toxicants, electro fishing, webbing, shooting, cannon netting, baiting, etc.) Conducts various educational and public relation activities by conducting field trips and providing information on various fish and wildlife topics, regulations, activities, and programs. Trains Wildlife and Fisheries Technicians and various trades personnel, including use, maintenance and calibration of scientific and technical equipment.
