JOB TITLE: Assistant Teacher
EMPLOYER: Mount Washington Preschool and Child Care Center
DEPARTMENT: Harry Pregerson Child Development Center
REPORTS TO: Director, Site Supervisor, or Assistant Site Supervisor
This position supports the classroom under the guidance of the classroom teacher.
EFFECTIVE DATE: 4/1/2023
SUMMARY: Provides support to the classroom to provide a safe, positive, engaging environment for the children, families, and staff.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Follows agency personnel policies and procedures.
- Participates in assigned professional growth activities for learning and development.
- Understands professional issues and the need for incorporating NAEYC Code of Ethics.
- Maintains safe and developmentally appropriate indoor and outdoor environment.
- Supervises and directly interacts with children in a warm and positive way.
- Develops and provides developmentally and culturally appropriate activities.
- Implements conflict management and problem-solving strategies with children and adults.
- Implements program of food service according to established nutritional and food handling guidelines.
- Follows universal health precautions.
- Follows agency policies and procedures for health and safety.
- Implements emergency procedures as required.
- Communicates positively and actively develops reciprocal relationships with children, families, and staff members.
- Develops and assists in facilitating parent program events.
- May participate in conferences with parents.
- Facilitates program organization.
- Maintains appropriate records.
- Participates in the evaluation and supervision of activities.
- Performs other related duties as assigned by management.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- This job has no supervisory responsibilities.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- No prior experience or training.
- Verification of high school diploma or general education degree (GED).
- 6 units of Child Development with “C” or higher.
- Immunizations (Measles, Pertussis, Influenza) and TB Clearance.
- Ability to successfully pass fingerprint clearances (State Criminal History, FBI and CACI.)
- Valid California Driver’s License or California Identification Card.
- Basic Computer Skills. Microsoft Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint a plus.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- Frequently required to stand, walk, and sit.
- Frequently required to utilize hand and finger dexterity.
- Frequently required to climb, balance, bend, stoop, kneel or crawl.
- Continually required to talk or hear.
- Frequent exposure to outside weather conditions in the outdoor play yard.
- While performing the duties of this job, the noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
- The employee must occasionally lift and /or move more than 30 pounds.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close and distance vision to supervise the children.
