Job Description
The Network Engineer is responsible for the design implementation and maintenance of network infrastructure ensuring optimal performance and security across various network types including LAN WAN and WLAN. This role involves configuring managed IP networks including switches routers firewalls and servers as well as supporting Building Management Systems (BMS) by maintaining and upgrading network systems. The Network Engineer will troubleshoot network issues develop custom applications for system automation and collaborate with crossfunctional teams to ensure the successful execution of projects. With a strong focus on cybersecurity the Network Engineer will work closely with customer IT departments to implement and maintain robust security standards. The ideal candidate will have a solid foundation in networking principles experience in configuring and debugging network hardware and software and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
Responsibilities:
- Maintain and Troubleshoot Network Systems: Oversee the maintenance of network hardware and software monitor performance and address any issues that arise.
- Design and Implement Network Infrastructure: Develop and execute network infrastructure plans install and configure network equipment and set up firewalls to ensure secure operations.
- Network Configuration: Configure and manage IP networks including managed network switches network controllers routers firewalls and servers. Expertise with routers Layer 2 and 3 switches wireless access points and firewalls such as pfSense Palo Alto and Checkpoint is highly desirable.
- Routing and Security: Design and configure routing through firewalls Access Control Lists (ACLs) and other mechanisms.
- Building Management Systems (BMS): Manage and maintain BMS network systems including installing operating and upgrading computers and ensuring all electronic equipment is fully functional and uptodate.
- Network Analysis and Troubleshooting: Analyze troubleshoot and resolve network issues with a thorough understanding of the network design including device connections layout physical and logical structure and network protocols like TCP/IP Suite FTP SMTP SNMP DHCP DNS and RSTP.
- Protocol and Standards: Knowledge of TCP and UDP ports and IEEE standards such as 802.3 (Ethernet) 802.11 (WiFi) and 802.3af (PoE).
- Software Implementation: Utilize specialized software for writing custom applications that enhance building performance or automate system backups for ongoing building management.
- Performance Reporting and Optimization: Use reporting software to monitor building performance making necessary adjustments to optimize system performance and tuning.
- Software Development: Develop enhancements to existing software to add functionality for energy reporting and customer dashboard interfaces.
- CrossFunctional Collaboration: Provide input and support to engineering sales and project management teams for the accurate estimation design installation startup commissioning and training for building network systems.
- Project Documentation: Ensure timely creation of software backups for projects and software development and assist in preparing asbuilt drawings and Operation & Maintenance Manuals.
- Cybersecurity Implementation: Work with customer IT departments to implement cybersecurity standards within BMS/OT networks including configuring firewalls VPNs IPsec encryption (TLS/SSL) and managing certificate (CA) generation and maintenance.
- Disaster Recovery: Develop and implement disaster recovery procedures maintaining uptodate knowledge of security and networking best practices.
- Additional Duties: Perform other duties as assigned.
Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelors degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering Computer Science Information Technology or a related networking discipline.
- 2 years of networking experience.
- Proficiency in computer operating systems including MS Office Suite.
- Solid understanding of basic networking principles.
- Experience in configuring and troubleshooting network hardware and software.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
Preferred Qualifications:
- 5 years of networking experience.
- Experience leading a team of network engineers.
- Networking certifications.
- Familiarity with Optigo Cisco Juniper Microtik Tosibox PFSense or other managed network systems.
- Ability to troubleshoot electrical and electronic circuitry including reading and interpreting diagrams.
- Working knowledge of AC power circuitry including breakers and multiphase power (120VAC and above).
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to empathize and work through issues creatively to achieve successful outcomes and customer satisfaction.
- Awareness of industry culture and practices.
