Job Description

We are seeking an ambitious mechanically-inclined Food industry Operations professional with experience producing and packaging bulk food ingredients, animal feed, or dry powdered products. As the Packaging Operations Manager you will be responsible for leading the safe material handling, product blending, packaging, and warehouse logistics of all dry finished goods in a high-speed manufacturing environment. You will also ensure adherence to all safety programs and help drive continuous improvement programs. This is a high visibility role functioning as the “right-hand” of the Operations Manager and offers tremendous career advancement potential.

Our client is a leading supplier of edible seeds, ancient grains, sweet spices, customized grain blends and specialty whole grain flours and spices in the U.S. They are experiencing significant growth as their ingredients are being incorporated into a wide range of baking products to provide distinctive flavor and nutrition. Our client has expertise in helping their customers differentiate their brands with healthy and flavorful grain-based foods.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Lead team of operators to manage the sanitary process workflow of material handling, product blending, finished packaging, and warehouse logistics of high-volume dry food ingredients.
  • Track key performance indicators (KPIs) to provide direction to the team, to resolve technical or production issues, and to maintain high levels of operational equipment efficiencies (OEE).
  • Collaborate with Master Scheduler and Customer Service team to ensure customer orders are being met, while communicating any potential delays.
  • Conduct usage analyses of ingredients and packaging materials to determine reorder points.
  • Conduct overpack analyses to ensure bag weight policy is followed to prevent loss of product.
  • Maintain compliance with all Food Safety and FDA regulatory programs, while striving to continuously improve plant safety performance.
  • Promote Continuous Improvement culture utilizing Six Sigma and Lean Manufacturing tools.
  • Maintain inventory of pallets, bags, ingredients, and packing materials.
  • Lead all operator training and adherence to all standards of warehouse cleaning and sanitation, mixing, and packaging by incorporating HACCP and GMP guidelines.
  • Generate quality control and inventory data and enter information in central ERP system.
  • Complete food safety audits periodically.

Qualifications include:

  • B.S. in Engineering (Industrial or Mechanical) or other technical degree preferred.
  • 10+ years of Operations, Material Handling, or Packaging experience in Food Manufacturing.
  • Prior experience supervising a high-speed packaging operation is preferred.
  • Knowledge of FDA, Food Safety plans (HAACP), and Food Process Sanitation protocols.
  • Strong “hands on” mechanical aptitude with exposure to PLCs, instrumentation, pneumatic systems, conveyers, blenders/mixers, forklifts, scales, carton/packaging equipment, and warehouse operations.
  • Exposure to Continuous Improvement projects utilizing programs such as Six Sigma, Kaizen, TPM and other Lean manufacturing concepts is a plus.
  • Strong team building/leadership skills and excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to lift and move 50 lbs. on a regular basis.
  • Flexibility and adaptability, with the personality to relate well with all types of people.
