Job Description

Position Summary:

This is a full-time position with competitive benefits and salary. Our office is in the historic Bradbury building in downtown Los Angeles, but we will also consider remote workers.

Job Responsibilities:

• Report to and work closely with the executive editor on digital and print
• Commission primarily essays (many longform) — but also interviews and reportage — on policy, climate change, economics, technology, culture, philosophy and geopolitics
• Assign and stay on track of deadlines
• Edit pieces from start to finish, including developmental editing, backfielding (sometimes significantly reworking or asking for rewrites or additions) and copy editing
• Write sharp heds and deks
• Work with the art editor to make sure that the original art they commission reflects the nuances of the written work for each piece
• Strategize with the audience growth editor on how best to promote each piece
• Load and publish pieces into our CMS
• Find and recruit new authors to add to our freelance author base
• Because we are a small team, we all pitch in on varied tasks, which may include working with engineers to make changes to the CMS when needed, submitting for awards, occasionally fact-checking, etc.

Required Job Qualifications:

• 5 or more years of experience as an editor or reporter at a news outlet or similar magazine
• Fluency in digital media
• Knowledge of the topics we cover
• Strong writing and communications skills
• Bachelor’s degree
• Based in the U.S.

Preferred Skills:

• Experience in print media
• Fluency in foreign languages

Salary Range :

$125K - $160K depending on skills and experience
